START – Future solutions for goods distribution
European cities are the centres of European industry and economic growth. An efficient distribution of goods in cities is therefore crucial for the vitality of the centres of European cities.

The current goods distribution however, causes emissions and is not necessarily energy efficient. Complementary to the long-term planning of reducing need of transport, the START project takes a short term approach and combines actions such as access restrictions, consolidation centres and incentives in order to make goods distribution in city centres more sustainable and efficient.

The cities Bristol, Göteborg, Ljubljana, Ravenna and Riga are together with local partners introducing and developing measures that will benefit both businesses and citizens by making goods distribution more energy efficient and hence reducing the related air pollution. The START approach is based on close collaboration between the city government, transport companies and local businesses formalised in local freight networks, which will be established in every partner city. The networks will have periodic meetings where the activities and the progress of the project are discussed.
