Working with the provision of incentives is a way to reduce the energy intensity of freight transport by “rewarding” the use of clean vehicles, high load factors and the adoption of consolidation schemes.
The incentives can be twofold; regulatory incentives and financial incentives.
Within the incentives workpackage the START cities will:
- Raise awareness among freight companies about energy efficiency
- Promote the introduction of clean vehicles (CNG and Bio-fuels)
- Develop “extras” for clean vehicles and trucks with a high load rate
- Promote and train for eco-driving and maintenance of vehicles
The main output of this work package will relate to:
- The appraisal of the range of available incentives and the selection of the most suitable ones in Ravenna
- Development of incentives for high load factor and clean vehicles in Göteborg resulting in a supposed 10% reduction of vehicles in the areas and 10% increase of clean vehicles
- Package of support, technical guidance and training tools in Bristol. Approximately 5-10 fleets and train 50 drivers will benefit from the support package and guidance.
- Promotion campaign to introduce biofuel vehicles and study of the status of the technical condition of current freight transport in Riga
- The administrative and technical set up of the package of incentives;
- The operational implementation of incentive schemes;
- The management of the schemes;
- The assessment of user reactions, barriers and drivers;
- The transfer of knowledge across sites and outside the project.
